I think another reason games are rated M are so that parents are given control over what their children play. if parents don’t mind that kids play those games, they can buy them for their kids.

    Spiffing does mean good.

The whole M thing. It doesn’t help that I don’t know what M means (17+?) but over here, TF2 is a 15. BBFC website says:

“The BBFC’s Guidelines at ‘15’ state that ‘Violence may be strong but may not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury’. The violence in TEAM FORTRESS 2 is certainly strong. Depending on which playable character is selected, a number of weapons are available to the player, including knives, guns, flamethrowers and rocket launchers. These weapons can cause opponents to fall down, spurt blood, catch fire, or blow apart, respectively, but the manic pace of the game means that there is no time to dwell on such moments and the impact of the violence is significantly reduced by very stylised, cartoonish visuals that give the impression of an animation rather than a real situation.”

Concerning the M rating: Any M game can be sold to a minor, it is not illegal in the US or Canada to sell a M rated game to a person under 17. However the past 5 years has seen a large amount of retailers restricting game M sales, I know Bestbuy/Futureshop and EB/Gamestop have policies restricting M sales, that said EB/Gamestop employees will sell to minors as long as a Manager is not at the counter.

The ESRB rating is an industry rating system, not governmental. Government mandated rating systems dont work, look at Australia, the people they have rating the games don’t have a clue. The biggest problem with the ESRB is that the publisher picks a slice of a game for the ESRB to rate. Parents need to be more responsible, the government should not have perform the parents role.
